Excess-type constipation
⢠Constipation that lasts a few days.
⢠Foul-smelling breath.
⢠Distended abdomen.
⢠Irritable.
⢠Red cheeks.
With this type of constipation, the parents or caregivers should make sure that the child is not overeating. Overeating creates accumulation disorder and causes heat to build up in the digestive tract. Mindlessly eating while watching television, playing video games, or over-snacking in between meals are some ways children can overeat. âSnackingâ has become mainstream nowadays, with any food imaginable wrapped up in a convenient, brightly colored, mini-sized, version of itself, ready to eat. These are irresistible to kids! Reduce the amount of processed âdryâ snacks in their dietâcrackers, chips, and pretzels.
It is commonly thought to be advantageous to give children raw vegetables when they are constipated due to the fiber content, but because raw vegetables are hard for children to digest, they should be avoided in this case. Most of their vegetables should be cooked, but as the bowels become regular, a small of amount of raw vegetables may be incorporated back into their diet. Cowâs milk and milk products can be eliminated for a two-week trial, as certain children are unable to digest the proteins in the milk.
